Re(New) Youth Giving

Are you looking to start, renew, or reimagine your youth giving effort or program?

Are you seeking inspiration and guidance for how to share or build power equitably, especially across generations?

Are you wanting a space to practice transforming issues causing tension or harm, especially centering race?

Are you hoping to bring more calm and compassion to your life and those you do this work with?

If so, you are not alone.

Gather in circle starting this November with other youth leaders and supportive adults wanting to explore these questions and intentionally work together to grow more conscious, compassionate, and connected youth giving.

 The Circle.

This 4-month journey is for youth leaders and their supportive adult(s) who, together, are wanting to embody an anti-racist, socially just culture and practice.  All levels of experience are welcome, so come as you are.

We’ll hold space for each other and (among other things) we will create:

  • Personal growing giving project + care plans

  • A collaborative Martin Luther King, Jr. growing giving project with $3,000+

  • Growing giving profiles and avatars

Participants will be invited into a circle to build relationships, practice redistributing power, and foster responsibility and compassion as we see what emerges on our journey. To honor those in the circle, commitment to attendance and use of webcam is important.  There will be intentional breaks and spaces designed for youth-only and adult-only time during the circle.

Participants will also be invited to schedule two team and/or individual coaching times with Annie–one at the beginning and another at the end of the experience.  This will be a time to share specific wishes, challenges, growth interests, or questions…or to work on a specific plan or skill together.  These 90 minute spaces will be tailored to ensure you feel supported working on and leading the youth giving changes you desire.

Individual circle resource guides will be co-created throughout the journey.

And, a mail treasure will be sent in advance of each circle.

Hi, I’m Annie and I’ve been growing giving as long as I can remember — it’s how I make sense of and move in the world.  I am also always growing my practice and learning how to move in ways that cause less harm and spread more compassion and love.

I grew up experiencing a lot of change, some welcome most not. I learned early to make choices, some healthy and others not, about how I let those changes impact me.  I believe we are all worthy of making changes for freedom. And, that we shape those changes through continually learning and growing.

I have dedicated the past 20 years to working with and for organizations that strengthen communities and grow collective liberation.  A constant thread through my journey has been supporting the involvement of young people in community involvement and organizing.  I have been supporting youth philanthropy and giving efforts, especially in family foundations and giving families, for 15+ years and am grateful to the young people who continue to question and teach me.  I have been a recipient of philanthropy from a young age, wrote my first check to a community foundation at age 21 to honor the death of my cousin, and have helped start giving circles and foundations. I come to this work to grapple with, repair, and heal the harms I have experienced and made over the years in community giving and philanthropy and do something different.

Along with degrees in agricultural education, community development, and a PhD in social justice focused-Leadership and Change, I have been trained in family philanthropy, trauma-informed practice, and conflict transformation, including the Immunity to Change personal conflict transformation framework.  I openly explore and honor spirituality and healing practices, including oracle, sound, and somatics.  Singing and music has always been important to me.

My husband, George, and I are the proud parents of Marcelo.  You can usually find us near water with our Australian Shepherd, Ellie.  We give thanks daily to live on the Island of Maui, in the military occupied Kingdom of Hawai’i.

Looking back, my community organizing has always focused on...

  • Equitable access and increasingly racial justice

  • Food justice and care for the land

  • Respecting and celebrating culture, art, and creatives

  • Advocating for youth, rural, and LGBTQIA+

  • Growing leadership, spirituality, and healing
